Apparently the man had a diabetic episode and crashed his car in the woods. When the emergency services personnel arrived, the driver was gone. After some investigation into where he was coming from prior to the accident it was determined he had this serious diabetic condition. The Pennsylvania State Police made the request for CAP in the early morning hours of 3Aug02. After speaking with the requesting trooper (Who was A CAP senior member)it was found out that the man got very violent when he had these episodes. We decided that cadets would NOT be entering the woods if there was a chance they would face a hostile victim. The trooper also stated the PSP heilcopter was unable to search the area due to heavy foilage blocking the view of the ground. Based on all these facts, CAP was not committed to the mission but stood by until 1200 hours when the man was found by the requesting trooper, walking along a road near the crash. The page that was sent out over the Group 2 pagers was to call the SAROPS cellular phone. I left a voice message updating the status of the mission and further instructions if there were any. This procedure will be used in the future but it may not be the SAROPS cell number. Thanks for all of your support! |
