CADET PROGRAMS |
The most visible part, and indeed the backbone of the entire Civil Air Patrol,
are the cadets. Cadets in CAP must be between the ages of 12, while in the
6th grade or higher, and 21.
Cadets are school students who take the time to participate in CAP activities. As a result, we give them special opportunities to learn skills in: Leadership Training From the beginning, cadets learn the art of drill and proper wear of the CAP Air Force style uniform. They also learn military customs and courtesies, and teamwork. Aerospace Education As part of their career in CAP, cadets are able to learn the latest in aerospace and aviation issues. At the Squadrons, cadets are offered supplemental courses as well as aircraft orientation flights. Cadets are also able to participate in squadron field trips to airports, the National Air & Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institute, and NASA facilities such as the Goddard Space Flight Center. Drill Team Each year, cadets try out for, and compete in wing and national drill team competitions. With practice, both in and out of squadron, cadets form a precision, military silent drill team that rivals the best that the rest of the military has to offer. Color Guard As part of our Community Service program, cadets have performed Color Guard functions at high school graduations and other community events. Encampment Cadets are able to participate each summer in a week long encampment activity with a branch of the armed services. Past encampments at Fort Indiantown Gap near Lebanon, Pennsylvania, have allowed cadets to further learn basic leadership skills, practice teamwork, refine military customs and drill, experience aircraft/helicopter orientation flights, and practice with armed services personnel. This encampment is the ultimate education in military bearing. Summer Ranger School Cadets are able to participate each summer in a week long Summer Ranger School. These encampments, held at Hawk Mountain near Allentown, Pennsylvania, provide cadets with practical survival techniques, land rescue and evacuation techniques, as well as physical fitness training. The Hawk Mountain Summer Ranger School is a certified national CAP activity which attracts cadets from throughout the United States. Cadet Solo School For the most motivated, hardest working cadets, comes the ultimate opportunity: a chance to learn to fly! Cadets who meet certain requirements are eligible to attend a "flying encampment" where they are given free instruction in aircraft piloting. The school concludes with the cadet flying the CAP aircraft alone, or "solo". Cadets who successfully complete this program are able to wear solo wings on their uniform, and are eligible for a scholarship for flying school. |
